QUILTY Treasures

AUSTRALIAN QUILT SHOW • The Australian Quilt Show is in its fourth year – and with a prize pool of more than $31,000, this is Australia’s biggest quilting prize purse. Sponsored by Expertise Events and Janome, the prizes include $19,800 in cash and three amazing Janome sewing machines.

Secondary Pat terns with LORENA URIARTE • Lorena is a gifted quilter who brings her vision to life through expert techniques and meticulous craftsmanship. Specialising in fussy cutting, she skilfully creates stunning secondary patterns, adding depth and intricacy to her designs. Whether hand or machine piecing, Lorena’s ability to foresee the final result allows her to craft quilts with incredible cohesion and artistry. Her passion for texture shines through in her hand quilting and hand-finished bindings, ensuring each piece is both visually captivating and tactilely rich.

POSITIVE negative • This plus quilt with a twist is surrounded by literal negative space. Lorena worked with leftovers from a red and white quilt. You may wish to use more colours. The units are pieced improvisationally and then trimmed down to sew into square blocks. It comes together much faster than expected with quick piecing techniques.

EBB & FLOW • Although Ebb & Flow uses just one block, the design is created by using two distinct groups of fabrics. The first group of lighter-value fabrics are alternated with a darker-value group. To achieve the scrappy look, choose fabrics with small to medium busy prints in both lighter and darker groups.

MILL POINT • This versatile Chain Star Variation block pattern can be adapted for any season, and with the right Christmas-themed fabrics, it transforms into a stunning holiday quilt.

BRING ME the scraps • This quilt first appeared in our sister magazine, Homespun, in February 2020. We are now sharing it with our Quilters Companion readers. Featuring the traditional Churn Dash block, the successful scrappy look is created using a wide variety of fabric colours and prints.
