QUILTY Treasures
25 YEARS OF INSPIRATION
Amazing Applique with BARBIE MITCHELL • Barbie is a quilter, maker, artist and tutor with a passion for flowers, vibrant colours and the wonders of nature. She lives an off-grid life with her husband Matt, their Japanese Spitz Frankie, and a flock of gorgeous chickens. “When I’m not exploring the bush on foot or on my dirt bike, I’m usually stitching — practising my needleturn appliqué — a daily ritual that brings me immense joy,” she shares. Last year, Barbie celebrated her 50th birthday with her first overseas adventure (with her eldest daughter): a whirlwind trip to London and Italy, culminating in an artist residency in France. This year she was invited to teach at QuiltCon in Phoenix, Arizona, she will lead a quilting retreat and tour in Italy and she is an invited exhibitor at the annual Pour L’Amour du Fil in France.
MEMORIES of France • During Barbie’s residency in Beaumontde-Pertuis, France, she absorbed lots of memories and images. This quilt features her trademark appliqué and large flowers, as well as le Coq (rooster), cigale (cicada) and fleurs-de-lis – all very French.
JARDIN d' Argent • Celebrate 25 years of quilting inspiration with Helen Stubbings’ exquisite Jardin d’Argent (Silver Garden) cushion. This design blooms with the timeless beauty of French florals, rendered in delicate appliqué. The Tilda Wallflower fabric collection comes alive like a silver garden bathed in moonlight. This cushion offers a touch of refined elegance to your home.
FULL MOON Part 2 • Welcome to Part 2 of the glorious Full Moon quilt project. The instructions for four blocks were included in Part 1, published in QC#133. In this this issue, you’ll find instructions for the remaining three blocks, border, assembly and finishing. The materials required to make the complete quilt appeared in QC#133.
QUILTING FESTIVAL Quilt Competition
APPLIQUÉ FOR ALL • As we have a number of appliqué projects in this issue, we turned to The Appliqué Guild of Australia to ask them what’s going on in their guild.
THIS Town • Five years ago, this sweet quilt appeared in Quilters Companion’s sister magazine, Homespun. The chequerboards, hearts, pinwheels and houses are nestled together in a fabric community that is sure to warm the hearts of Quilters Companion readers too.
Ruler Ready: GEOMETRIC FRAMEWORKS FOR FREEHAND FUN (SIT-DOWN OR STAND-UP) • Let’s talk about rulers. Not just any rulers, but the kind that unlock a whole new world of design possibilities, especially when paired with the joy of free-motion quilting. Whether you’re snuggled up to your favourite sit-down machine or commanding a stand-up long-arm, rulers can be your secret weapon for creating stunning geometric frameworks that make your freehand quilting truly shine.
Wagga Wonders with GRACE WIDDERS
SELVEDGE Surprise • When auditioning fabrics for this wagga-style quilt, the eye-catching aqua fringed selvedge inspired its use as a highlight. Some woven fabrics have this fringed selvedge or you can use any woven wool to create your own.
